Tsunami Warning Cancelled

The Rabaul Volcano Observatory (RVO) has cancelled the Tsunami Warning issued by the US Geological Survey minutes after this morning’s 7.0 and 6.2 magnitude earthquakes off the south west coast of the New Britian Island.

Principal Geodetic Surveyor, Steve Saunders, told EMTV News it was a tectonic earthquake southwest of Pomio, and after shocks will continue throughout the day.

“The US tsunami warning has been cancelled already. We have not heard from the area yet so we do not know of any effects,” Saunders said.

Meanwhile RVO advises people in the area to be on alert.

RVO has also confirmed that continuous aftershocks are unlikely to trigger a tsunami, only a large earthquake or a induced landslide into the sea.
