Emma Garo, Solomon Islands First Female Chief Magistrate

Adding to the list of women breaking barriers and in the legal fraternity and judiciary is Emma Garo from Solomon Islands.

Ms Garo who was serving as a Magistrate and Deputy Chief Magistrate in the Honiara Central Magistrates’ Court, was sworn in last Friday as the Chief Magistrate.

Garo’s appointment as the Chief Magistrate makes her, the first female Chief Magistrate in Solomon Islands.

Like Papua New Guinea and other Pacific Island nations, Solomon Islands now sees women breaking barriers and taking fields that were once dominated by men.

Her appointment leaves inspiration to growing young women and girls in Solomon Islands and other Pacific Nations.

Garo encourages women both from the legal fraternity and other sectors, to work hard, strive and work the ranks up in whatever career they choose.

Chief Justice Sir Albert Palmer, who appointed Ms Garo as the first female Chief Justice, said Garo is a pioneer for women and girls in Solomon Islands and is an example of how determination leads to success.
