NCD Wastewater Management Project launched

Today saw the official launching of the ‘NCD Wastewater Management Project.’

The project is being facilitated by Japanese agency, JICA and water company, EDA RANU.

The project which will be completed in 2018, aims to develop a sewerage system in the city that will prevent pollutants from flowing into coastal areas.

At present, Port Moresby does not have a wastewater treatment plant.

This leaves raw wastes being disposed into the sea which then becomes a threat to the natural environment, including the people.

The project plant will be constructed in Kila Kila, on the outskirts of the city.

The sewage treatment plant will treat eight-teen thousand four hundred cubic metres of water per day.

Having this project in place will improve efforts made in protecting marine life and the natural environment.

This may promote healthy living and hygienic practices.

This is also in line with Eda ranu’s on-going upgrade of the sewerage system (POMSSUP).

The project will be a symbolic one for PNG and Japan as it is implemented in close collaboration between the two governments.
