60% of School Fees Unaccounted

The government’s free education policy involving millions of kina has hit a snag.

Sixty percent of what has been paid out has not been accounted by schools.

K652 million was earmarked for school fee subsidies this year. However,there are still complaints of lack of infrastructure development amongst thers.

Finance Minister James Marape also stressed said that last year sixty percent of schools inthe country did not submittheir acquittal reports.

Mr. Marape’said process is underway to review this issue.

He said mid this year,the cash component will be changed to commodity where school materials will be purchased and distributed rther than dishing out cash to school administrations.

The Minister was responding to a series of questions raised by Member for AnglimpSouth Waghi Komun Koim.

Mr. Koim asked whther government had effective accounting mechanisms in place to see whtherthese funds are used for their intended purposes.

The minister emphasised that all schools have been urged to submittheir annual reports beforethey are issued subsidies for next year.
