The 54th National Athletics Championships commenced today at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium, and will continue for the next two days.
Following these Championships, a team will then be selected to represent Papua New Guinea at the 2015 Pacific Games.
Secretary of the PNG Athletics Union, Phillip Rheder, says the selection process will not be easy for the union, given the vast talent scouted from the 6th PNG Games last year.
Amongst the fresh talent, elite athletes along the likes of Toea Wisil, Betty Burua and Mowen Boino will also make an appearance.
Rheder said, these championships will not only enable the PNG Athletics Union to identify gold medal potentials for the Games, but will be a great opportunity to test and asses the strength of athletes who have trained abroad, under PNG’s Go for Gold program.
Day 1 of competition saw the commencement of heats for the 400m, 800m and 10,000m long distance, while tomorrow, the field events will begin at 9am, with Shotput and Discuss.
