25 Buimo Jail Escapees Recaptured

By Martha Louis – EM TV News, Port Moresby

A police-led special operation following the Buimo jailbreak earlier this year has seen the recapturing of escapees who have been on the run since the breakout occurred in February.

The Criminal Investigation Division led the special operation, code named ‘Painim Kalabus’. The team comprised 26 police and four correctional service officers.

The operation has so far recaptured, arrested and charged 25 prisoners who have been returned to Buimo Correctional Service.

Two escapees were killed during a dispute at Busu Compound along the Back Road area. The opposing faction in the dispute killed the two men.

Another escapee was shot and is still recovering at Angau Hospital.

The escapee was armed and in the process of robbing vehicles when he was intercepted by police.

He was involved in a number of armed hold ups on vehicles after escaping from prison.

Police have been utilised to follow up on other outstanding cases aside from the recapture of the escapees.

Lae Metropolitan Commander, Anthony Wagambie Jnr, said in order to maintain law and order the police need support from everyone, including business houses, the provincial government, NGOs and  citizens.

He said there has not been any special funding made available from stakeholders within Lae city and Morobe province.

Police headquarters has assisted the special operations with hired vehicles for surveillance and mobility.
