226 Health Support Workers at Lae’s Angau Plan to Go on Strike

226 health support workers in Angau are supporting their mother organization in Port Moresby and are planning to cast a secret ballot on Monday.

Lae branch President, John Tioti, says the hospital’s support staff are backing their colleagues until their log of claims are met by the government.

The workers are preparing to stage a nationwide strike with the other sister hospitals. They are planning to halt the hospital services until their log of claims are met by the government.

Angau is the second largest referral hospital in the country. It is where senior professional support staff  and locally employed ancillary staff play an important role in supporting the flow of services.

The workers want the government to meet their claims  and to compensate them for the increased hours of work.

In order to avoid disruption of hospital services, Health Support Services Union is calling on the government to expedite processes with the Department of Personnel Management to fast track their claims.
