20th International AIDS Conference

The fight against HIV/AIDS, has taken to the corporate sector, with a stronger emphasis and push on public-private partnerships.

At the helm of this new push to get the private sector more committed to the fight, is Oil Search Managing Director, Peter Botten.

He made his views known, when speaking at the 20th International AIDS Conference staged in Melbourne, Australia.

More than twelve thousand delegates from 200 nations make up the week-long conference, which is the largest AIDS conference in the world.

Mr. Botten believes that more can be done by the Private Sector through Public–Private Partnership, to contain the virus before it becomes a severe epidemic.

He said HIV/AIDS management tools and strategies discussed at the Conference will be utilized in Oil Search Health Foundation’s programs.

The International AIDS Conference 2014 kicked off in Melbourne, Australia on Sunday with the official opening at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre

Papua New Guinea was on show with the participation of our Huli dancers, who set out in Melbourne to raise awareness on what the Oil Search Health Foundation was currently doing in PNG, to combat HIV/AIDS.

Oil Search Managing Director, Peter Botten had this to say about Oil Search’s involvement in the International AIDS Conference 2014.

He also stated that their operation sites in PNG are fenced and protected to keep animals out, but not village communities, and this is where the Oil Search Health Foundation plays a pivotal role in educating locals about HIV/AIDS and deliver much needed medical supplies around its operating sites.

Together with the Health Department, churches and NGO’s, the Oil Search Health Foundation now supports 166 clinics in five provinces, have tested over 45,000 people for HIV, provided training in HIV and STI management, along with reproductive and gender based violence.

The Foundation has also trained over 150 community health workers to test and treat HIV and over 50 school teachers have been supported to deliver programmes that educate students about HIV.

The Conference is set to put Oil Search  in the spotlight for its many positive contributions in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Papua New Guinea.
