Eight Kumalu Rape Suspects Hiding, Leaders Arrested

by Bethanie Harriman – EM TV, Lae

The people of Zenag have petitioned authorities for the arrest of eight suspects wanted for the assault of a man, and rape of a woman during attempts to cross the flooded Kumalu River last Monday.

The petition was handed to Bulolo MP, Sam Basil in Mumeng yesterday asking for Ward Councillors from the village of the accused to be arrested until the suspects are handed over.

Locals in Mumeng marched in protest yesterday, when a petition was handed to Bulolo authorities including local MP Sam Basil. The petition called for the arrest of the eight suspects.

Yesterday, local leaders backed by the community in Zenag called on the district administration for support.

Mumeng LLG President, Okam Paton explained that law and order in the area has worsened since 2002 because of homebrew and marijuana consumption.

Local Leaders in Mumeng have demanded action for the Kumalu incident, where both hands of a man was chopped and a woman raped while two others have said to have escaped.

They wanted the suspects’ leaders to be arrested and only released when the eight suspects are handed over to Police.

Bulolo MP, Sam Basil supported the arrests of four ward councillors from communities where the suspects are from.

Basil told people gathered that leaders will be held responsible for the actions of their people.
