2015 Pacific Games Baton Unveiled in Port Moresby

The Games Relay has been a tradition for all multi-sport events.

This year, the 2015 Pacific Games have opted to use a baton, instead of a torch.

The baton was revealed on Monday, at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Port Moresby.

The baton, designed and created by well renowned Papua New Guinean artist, Gickmai Kundun, is symbolic of Papua New Guinea’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.

Gickmai Kundun is an artist from the Chimbu Province, and has had his paintings and sculptures exhibited globally.

Kundun said, it was an honour and privilege to be able to contribute his skills and art to an event of this scale, and importance to Papua New Guinea.

The baton design depicts a kundu drum; and is made from Copper, representing one of Papua New Guinea’s major resource commodities.

The drum is shaped like an hourglass; and traditionally used as a method of communication.  A kundu is a drum hollowed out of a tree. There are hundreds of different varieties throughout Papua New Guinea, based on a common design.
