16 Piracy Suspects Caught at Border

Police in Northern Province have apprehended and charged 16 sea piracy suspects, for being in possession of homemade guns, pistols and iron rods.

Provincial Police Commander, Lincoln Gerari, said this afternoon, police caught the youths at Guguni point, near the border of Morobe and Northern in the early hours of Wednesday.

Four police officers were on their way to Lae in Morobe Province, to pick up an armed robbery suspect under Police custody by dinghy, when they intercepted the suspected pirates.

“We sent four of our police officers to Lae, to pick up armed robbery suspect in Lae under police custody by dinghy when they intercepted a dinghy with sixteen youths at Guguni border of Morobe and Northern.”

The officers conducted a search and found the offensive weapons.

The Officers aborted their mission to Lae and brought the suspects back to Popondetta.

“They were arrested and charged for having in possession of offensive weapons and locked up in the cells.”

The 16 suspects will appear in Court next week with no bail granted.
