10 Political Parties Deregistered

By Fabian Hakalits – EM TV News, Port Moresby

The Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission has cancelled the registration of ten political parties.

According to Chairman, Sir Andrew Trawen, these parties have failed to comply with relevant provisions of the Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates.

Cancellation of these ten political parties was gazetted in the National Gazette Number G513, 2015 on August 13 2015.

This was the decision of the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission

Sir Andrew highlighted that the Commission is now getting tougher on political parties for non-compliance, especially with the submission of annual financial returns.

It was also noted, these parties have just disappeared after the 2012 National Elections.

Sir Andrew said under the current OLPAC, political parties with MPs are entitled to funding from the Central Fund.

The current focus for the registry is to strengthen political parties. Registrar of Political Parties, Dr Alphonse Gelu, said several initiatives were introduced like registration laws.

As part of the compliance process, the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates Commission has appealed to all political parties with MPs to submit their annual returns for 2015, before qualifying for funding.
