Youth Commonwealth Games Update

By Dion Kombeng – EMTV Sports, Port Moresby

The Youth Commonwealth Games are currently underway in Samoa, and athletes from Papua New Guinea are right in the thick of things.

PNG flag bearer and squash athlete, Lynette Vai, bowed out of the competition in the quarter-finals, when she was defeated by second seeded New Zealander, Elenor Epke, in very a close encounter.

In boxing, Beupu Noki lost to Northern Ireland fighter, James McGivern, in his second round of competition, seeing him bow out of games.

However, PNG still has one chance left in Thadius Katoa, who is scheduled to fight later this evening.

In swimming, Ryan Maskelyne grabbed a personal best during competition, and Savannah Tkatchenko has been swimming consistently, clocking some good times throughout the heats.

Over in weightlifting, Douglas Mea finished fifth in the 56kg weight category, and Bea Ovia finished fourth, just missing out on a podium finish.

And finally, in tennis, Violet Apisah is through to the quarter-finals of competition, while Matt Studding unfortunately has been eliminated.
