After the eruption of the Manam Volcano on Saturday, the Papua New Guinea Defence Force has sent in their relief teams.

The teams will ensure communication is set up and relief supplies are moved to the people of Manam currently on the island.

The PNGDF has deployed troops, a patrol boat, and chopper, to Manam Island to aid in logistics and to help assess the situation on the ground.

An update was given by Brigadier General, Gilbert Toropo, and Defence Secretary, Trevor Meauri, in Port Moresby.

Toropo said the important component of their assistance, was in supplying water and standing-by for the relocation of islanders, away from the most affected areas.

Meauri said the Defence Force Patrol boat on standby, will be used to ferry relief supplies to the island, a chopper will also be used to drop medical teams around the island and set up communication links, to report back to headquarters on the extent of damages
