Patilias Gamato says Electoral Commission will in the future look into voter registration

PNG Electoral Commissioner, Patilias Gamato, has regretted that there are names of eligible voters missing from the Electoral Roll.

At the media brief held yesterday in Port Moresby, Mr Gamato said the Electoral Commission will in the future, look into voter registration and adopt effective approaches to ensure all eligible voters go to the polls.

The process of registering people for the electoral roll in PNG will always be a problem. The urban centres have their own problems and the rural centres their own issues as well.

It is in my humble opinion that the ONLY TIME people WILL MAKE 100% EFFORT to actually front up and check their names is on the POLLING DAY. That is when the maximum number of potential voters are available.

Therefore this is actually the BEST TIME to CAPTURE A VERY HIGH NUMBER OF ELIGIBLE voters that HAVE NOT been REGISTERED. If the registering of eligible voters who missed out was to done at this time. This would in effect “kill 2 birds with one stone” in terms of maximising cost and maximising opportunity.

Whilst the eligible voter would miss out on voting during this time he/she would be guaranteed that their names would be on the next election period. and the Electoral Commission would have maximised their opportunity to capture as many people for the following elections electoral roll.
