by Adelaide Kari – EM TV News, Port Moresby

Leaders were welcomed to the opening ceremony of the 46th Pacific Islands Forum today with a traditional array of SingSing groups showing the diversity of the soon to be 40 year old nation.

The Secretary General, Dame Meg Taylor, welcomed the Island Nations and other countries attending the forum saying it was a professional and personal achievement for her as this would be the first time she would address the forum as the General Secretary and in her home country.

She went on to congratulate the outgoing Chair President of Palau Tommy Remengesau on a job well done in addressing issues in the region.

The Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Peter O’Neill warmly welcomed the leaders and reassured that talks on climate change and other issues will be addressed.

Before he went on to officially open the 46th Pacific Island forum, he encouraged the leaders to strengthen regionalism as this was the crucial in addressing key issues.
