Mobile Health can aid rural health

A technical researcher has presented an option for the advancement of health communications in ruraPNG.

Dr Arul Chib ofthe Nanyang Technical University in Singapore is inthe country for a week, creating awareness on mHealth or mobile health opportunities for the advancement of rural health in PNG

The mHealth concept has been put forward which seesthe use of cell phones in rural health communications.

The concept wasthe topic of a lunchtime seminar attheInstitute of National Affairs.

From where-ever a local health worker is in a life-threatening situation with a patientoa text and voice call can be connected with an on-call Doctor from anywhere inthe country.

Dr Chib who also serves as an assistant Director ofthe SingaporeInternet Research Centre in Singapore, says futher discussion with telecommunications companies andthe government will create awareness on Data collection.

The seminar was attended by a handful of people and representatives from BeP andthe Digicel Foundation.

mHealth is already being trialled in Milne Bey Province.
