Madang Police Boss: Robbers escaping by sea

Madang police are yet to gather leads to the recent spate of armed robberies in Madang where the preferred means of escape has been by sea.

Madang’s Provincial Police Commander, Jacob Singura,  says they are working on setting up a water policing unit which will help curb the high crime rate.

The town has suffered from serious crime  with tourism numbers taking a dive, according to operators.

Just two weeks ago, there was a major robbery between the waters of Karkar Island and Kubukam waterfront just on the north coast area of Madang.

Police say 12-armed men held up a boat belonging to a business house and escaped  with K60,000 in cash.

” That stretch of road has become notorious for robberies,” PPC Singura said.

But this is just one of several  crimes that have happened in Madang, as criminals become bolder in their actions.

PPC, Jacob Singura further added that the base woll be absed at Vidar.

They hope the unit will become a deterrent to criminals.

” We are working at measures with RD Fishing to set up a base at Vidar Point,” Singura added.

But, Madang police is also faced with another problem.

They have only one boat to counter escapes by criminals using boats after committing robberies.

Police have yet to receive good leads into the recent robberies being committed by the criminals.

So far they are still no suspects identified.

But police are appealing to the community to come forward and assist them with information so that those suspects involved can be apprehended.
