By Theckla Gunga – EMTV News, Wewak

Rice farmers in Angoram, East Sepik Province, are milling paddy rice with 70 percent recovery rate.

Known as the Sepik Organic Rice, half of what is milled is packaged and sold, while the rest is for consumption. Though it is a small setup, there are 825 rice farmers, spread across the Sepik River.

Established in 2016, rice is milled from inside this traditionally built house, with milling machines bought from Lae.

In 2017, the farmers cultivated and planted rice on 84 square kilometers of land, produced 52.7 tonnes of paddy rice and milled 36.6 tonnes of white rice.

Recently, local farmers from Sepik Organic Rice showcased their products in the APEC Senior Officials Meeting Three in Port Moresby.
