Lihir Mining Area Landowners Association Rebuttal

The New Ireland Provincial Administrator has called on the Lihir Mining Area Landowners Association (LMALA) to stop issuing misleading statements, diverting attention away from more pressing issues affecting the people of New Ireland.

Mr Monovi Amani said LMALA executives are misleading the people by opposing the signing of the revised Lihir MOA, when in fact LMALA had two representatives present during the full briefing prior to the signing.

He said by this signing, the stakeholders now have a common position on the terms and conditions of the review. This position was endorsed by all New Ireland stakeholders in September 2012.

He explained that LMALA was not a signatory party to this particular MOA as it was exclusively between the NIPG, the NIMAMAR LLG and the National Government.

Mr. Amani stressed that under the leadership of Sir Julius, the NIPG is continuously working with the people, guided by the Malagan Declaration, to move New Ireland closer to realizing an autonomous state, by taking control and assisting on a fair deal for the province’s resources
