Fiji Sevens Create History Winning First Ever Olympic Medal

The Fiji Sevens team created history by winning their country’s first ever Olympic Medal in Rio.

In the code’s maiden appearance at an Olympic Games, the country took the honours at Rio taking the top spot.

The Fijians ran rampant over their competition in Rio, stunning arch rivals New Zealand who they disposed of in the quarter finals, shattering their Olympic dreams.

Fiji were unstoppable all the way to the gold medal match where they blitzed Great Britain by a thumping 36 points.

Now they will be rewarded by their government, the players and management will receive medals and $30,000 from the state.

The $30,000 was promised by government in the budget announcement this year.

This was confirmed by Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum as government announced plans for the victory celebration for Fiji’s gold medal win.

With a total of $510,000 to be given by government, Sayed-Khaiyum said the money would be for their personal use.
